IE 242: 5 Best Blogging Tips for 2021

Best Blogging Tips for 2021 with Expert Blogger Jenny Melrose

You will hear me mentioning the importance of having an email list in this episode, so you need to grab that now if you don’t already have my How to Grow An Email List guide

I will be giving you my 5 best blogging tips for 2021 and answering some of the most commonly asked questions. The great thing is that all of these tips can also apply to a podcast if that’s what you’re focusing on.

Tip #1: Know Your Person and Their Problem

  • Know the problem you are solving and who you are solving it for.

One of the biggest mistakes that new bloggers can make is casting a net too wide and capturing no one in the process. You have to know who your ideal person is.

Your ideal person is probably going to be going through similar things to what you are going through. Maybe they have similarly aged children, or they are also single women, or they are also traveling for work. You will connect more quickly with those who are having similar life experiences.

When it comes to knowing who you are talking to, you have to be confident in creating content for your person. You will attract the right people and repel those who are not meant for you.

You cannot just toss spaghetti against the wall and hope it sticks. You have to know your person, understand their problem, and be confident in providing them the solution.

If this is something you are still struggling with, you can check out episode 191, where I talked about building your audience. And also, episode 80, where I teach you how to create your ideal avatar.

Tip #2 – Do Your Keyword Research

  • Research, using keyword tools, to know what words people are using to find their answers.

If you are looking to target your person and solve their problems, you have to know what words they use to reach them.

You can use tools like SEMRush or Ubersuggest to research what types of keywords you should be using.

If you are creating content for your person but are not putting the work into keyword research, you are wasting your time. Your content will not pop up for your person if you are not making sure you are using the right keywords.

One of the examples I have shared on more than one occasion is when I created the Lovebug Fruit Cups when I was still running The Melrose Family. No one was searching for “love bug fruit cups,” but they were searching for “non-candy Valentine’s Day ideas.”

When I started using the right keywords instead, that content blew up! In episode 154, we talked about keywords even more in-depth.

Tip #3 – Write About Something You Are Passionate About

  • Write about a topic that you are passionate about.

You might have started blogging back in 2015, writing about one thing, and now you have grown and changed and are not interested in that topic anymore.

Pivoting is okay. Be okay with changing. This is part of the entrepreneurial journey. There will be changes that come. Feel confident and be happy in what you are doing and what you are writing about.

If you are not focusing on your passions, your spark will begin to die out, and you will lose interest. Don’t be afraid to discover what makes you happy.

Tip #4 – Create Consistent Content

  • Consistently create content.

This is something that I know many people struggle with, especially in the last year when we have all struggled with overwhelm.

I have talked about this before on the podcast. It is so essential to make sure you are consistent where you can be. You do not have to be everywhere.

You will hear different people giving you different numbers for what it looks like to be creating consistent content. Drown out that noise. Look at what works best for you. What platform are you able to utilize consistently? What does that look like? Only you can decide that.

You also need to think about creating content on a platform that belongs to you. This could be an email list or a blog. Instagram and Facebook could go away tomorrow, and you would lose all of the content you have created for those platforms. Make sure you are putting work into platforms that belong to you.

Tip # 5 – Don’t Rely On Social Media

  • Don’t rely on a single platform to grow your traffic.

You must grow an email list to send your followers to your content. Social media can feel so easy and safe, but you cannot rely on these social media platforms to be on your side forever.

Your email list is the only sure-fire way for you to drive traffic to your site. Instead of putting up 37 pins a day, focus on growing your email list. It belongs to you.

And if you are struggling with growing your list, make sure you grab the guide that will walk you through it.

Are There Too Many Blogs Out There?

One of the biggest questions I get is people asking if the blogging atmosphere is over-saturated.

There are many people in the blogging/influencer space, but not very many of them are doing it the correct way. It is valuable to have a place that will allow Google to show off your content. You want Google to tell people that you have the answer to their problems.

And if you are following my five tips from this episode, you will find your content showing up in the search bar.

How Do I Get Paid?

Another question I get asked is how do bloggers get paid?

In 2020, we saw ads take a deep dive off of a cliff.

Now, a lot of bloggers do make money via ads. But you can also do sponsored campaigns, create digital products, and so much more. If you read this article, I talk about how to make money as an influencer.

Blogs are still profitable. I started blogging in 2011, and I sold that blog for six figures in 2019. I still consistently create blog content that goes along with my podcast. If you make sure to diversify, you will have money coming in.

This doesn’t happen overnight. There are ways you can hasten the process, like investing in coaching or working at professional development.

Your blog is the only way people will find you when using Google. So utilize these five tips. Listen to the episodes and read the articles that I linked.

And most of all, please grab the email list guide so that you can grow your list, get more of the right people seeing your content, and continue to diversify your income.

Action Steps:

Tired of being asked to create content for free... or better yet, a bag of granola?

Want to give them a piece of your mind? Or hit the delete button? You could...OR, you could steal the emails I use to flip those low-ball product offers into four-figure campaigns!
